Blackpool (FY1–FY4) is unlike anywhere else in the county to move in. Behind the Promenade and the Tower sit streets of tall Victorian terraces, a great many of them former or working guesthouses and B&Bs — which means big, awkward houses, lots of rooms, and the odd change-of-use clear-out. On the front itself, seafront flats bring lift bookings, tight resort parking and a wind off the Irish Sea that has views on how your wardrobe travels. We time these right, protect everything properly, and bring the crew size the job actually needs. Inland, Marton, Bispham and Cleveleys are calmer, more suburban runs.
Lytham St Annes: a gentler coast
South down the coast, Lytham and St Annes (FY8) are a different world — leafy, affluent and unhurried, all Edwardian villas, mature gardens and the famous championship links. A lot of our FY8 work is downsizing: a big family house traded for a manageable apartment or a bungalow nearer the green, a lifetime of things to sort with patience rather than speed. Storage often comes into it while the right new place turns up, and we’re happy to work that way. It’s the calm end of the Fylde, and the moves reflect it.
Poulton, Fleetwood & the north Fylde
Inland and north, Poulton-le-Fylde is a proper market town with a mix of period cottages and modern estates, while Fleetwood (FY7) keeps its fishing-port character out at the mouth of the Wyre, with the tram trundling down from Blackpool. Access here is easier than the resort centre, but the distances are longer, so we plan the route as much as the load.
Timing a coastal move
The coast has a rhythm, and it pays to work with it. Through the busy season and the Illuminations, the resort roads and the seafront fill up, parking tightens and the traffic crawls — so where we can, we’ll pick timings that dodge the worst of it. Guesthouse and change-of-use moves throw up their own puzzles: whole floors of near-identical rooms, fire doors on tight springs, and the odd commercial fit-out to clear alongside the household bits. None of it is a surprise to a crew that works the Fylde week in, week out — we plan for the season as much as the street.
Getting to & from the Fylde
